It is important to have the right policies and procedures in place, however, this will only help your business if you are comfortable following them. Providing staff training for managers on how to respond to a grievance or conduct disciplinary proceedings is equally valuable for ensuring consistent, reliable decisions. Other areas may be relevant for the whole workforce such as staff training on recognising and managing mental health concerns in the workplace.

Until March 2020, we ran a popular, monthly training program – the ‘A Day in the Life’ Employment Law and HR workshop series – for clients, HR managers and other business owners and advisers. These sessions focussed on a different topic each month and involved a review of the law, consideration of a scenario affecting our hypothetical employer (Preston Produce Limited) together with a question and answer session and a general, off-the-record discussion. The workshops were practical and interactive, culminating in a Mock Employment Tribunal hearing, and we look forward to holding these again, at both our Teesside and Newcastle offices, as soon as we can.

We have also just started to run ‘Talking Works’ catch-up sessions – informal, small group virtual meetings for employers and advisers to discuss the issues, challenges and opportunities we are currently facing together with best practice and how we are planning for the future.
