Family Solicitor – (Newcastle)

An opportunity has arisen for a Family Law Solicitor in our Newcastle Office.  Based in Central Square, just behind the train station we are keen to hear from experienced Family Solicitors who are looking for a new challenge.

Acting for private (non-legal aid) family clients in relation to Cohabitation and Pre-Nuptial Agreements, Divorce, Financial Settlement, Child Arrangements and child disputes, Domestic Abuse Injunctions and Cohabitation Disputes.   

You will be required to:
– Take instructions from and advise new and existing clients going through divorce or separation, children disputes and domestic abuse.
–  Ensure that all clients are advised fully of the available options and potential strengths or weaknesses of their case. – Where appropriate, to support clients in applying for mediation.
– Represent clients at Court.
– Work as part of the Family Department, under the supervision of the Head of Family, dictating and delegating work to the support staff as appropriate.
– Ensure that matters are dealt with cost efficiently and that clients are fully appraised of the costs / risks situation as applied to their case.
– Accurately time-record your work to assist in prompt billing.
– Efficiently manage files to ensure clients are aware of the costs being incurred and money paid on account.

In addition, you will:
– Take an active role in business development.
– Attend networking events.
– Promote the firm via social media.
– Advise clients at pro-bono law clinics and free initial appointments.
– Ensure the highest standard of legal advice and client care.
– Attend meetings and appointments in the Teesside area as required.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience
– Qualified solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
– 1-3 years’ PQE family law experience preferred.
– Resolution membership preferred.
– Previous experience of Microsoft Office, digital dictation and time-recording systems.

Apprentice – New Build (Newcastle)

We have a rare opportunity for an Apprentice to join our Residential Conveyancing team in our Newcastle Office.
Undertaking administrative duties within the department whilst working towards a qualification in business administration this really is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in law and willing to learn.

Your key duties will be:
– Opening files on practice management system
– Undertaking Solicitors Regulation Authority checks on law firms
– Photocopying
– Corresponding with clients and/or other law firms by e-mail, letter or telephone to maintain file progression
– Ordering property searches
– Preparing completion reports and submitting to client
– Applying to Land Registry to register completed documents
– Scheduling completed documents and forwarding these to client
– Closing and archiving files and updating computer systems

The ideal candidate will have good GCSE results in Maths and English, a friendly personality and be interested in a long term career in law.

Secretary – New Build 

We have an opportunity for an experienced Secretary to join our busy Residential Conveyancing (New Build) team.   Based in our Stockton office you will provide Secretarial and Administrative support to the Residential Property Fee earners.  Your main duties will be:

– Opening files on practice management system
– Undertaking Solicitors Regulation Authority checks on law firms
– Corresponding with clients and/or other law firms by e-mail, letter or telephone
– Ordering property searches
– Dealing with clients face to face and via telephone
– Producing and amending legal documents
– Applying to Land Registry to register completed documents
– Scheduling completed documents and forwarding these to client
– Closing and archiving files and updating computer systems
– Dealing with requisitions raised by HM Land Registry
– Carrying out ID checks and Money Laundering checks on clients
– Pursuing Initial Client Documentation
– Dealing with LMS and Lender Exchange systems to update cases

The ideal candidate will have experience of similar work in a busy environment and be great at multitasking.

Finance Graduate

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a Finance Graduate, ideally with some accounting / finance experience to join our team. The role will offer practical finance experience with the option to run simultaneously with professional exams (AAT) which the company will support.
Reporting into the Head of Finance, role responsibilities will include:

-Credit control
-Bank reconciliations
-Maintaining sales and purchase ledger
-Reconciling balances and analysis of balance sheet items
-Adhering to Solicitor Accounting Rules
-General administration support
-Audit and general control reviews

The role will be varied, the above list in not exhaustive, with the opportunity to learn all aspects of the finance function which is a great platform to really excel into a finance professional role. Full training will be provided along with supervision and support. You will be joining a team of six who are friendly, supportive and are looking forward to welcoming you into the team.

Ideal candidates for the Finance Graduate role must have the following skills and experience:

-A graduate with an accounting / finance related degree or finance qualification ideally with some relevant finance or accounting experience. We will consider applications from candidates that are working towards a degree and / or have relevant finance or accounting experience without a degree.
-Willing to work towards formal qualification such as the AAT
-Excellent communicative ability with an outgoing personality
-Strong analytical, numerical and reconciliation skills
-Good knowledge of Excel
-Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
-Proactive with a willingness to take on new challenges
-Articulate with a strong eye for detail
-Ability to pick things up quickly whilst maintaining accuracy

What to expect:

The office is open 8.30 until 5.15. We encourage students to start at 9.15 and finish at 3.00, although hours can be flexible to accommodate students who rely on public transport or lifts.

Students will be based at our Stockton on Tees office.

Duration can range from 1 day up to 5 days, during the same week.

During the week students will be supervised by one of our solicitors and trainee solicitors. Students will experience different specialisms and work types of a busy law firm, which will include, drafting, research, client meetings, problem solving and possibly a trip to the Court. Students can request observation of a particular specialism prior to their placement but this will depend on staff availability.

The work we do is confidential between us and our clients, and this confidentiality extends to our Students. It is vitally important that everything you work on inside the Law Firm remains confidential.

Trainee Solicitors

Jacksons Law Firm recruits trainee solicitors each year offering positions to a mix of law, non-law and joint honours graduates and to people who have changed career completely. We are interested in receiving applications from candidates with excellent academic qualifications with practical and social skills.
When you join our firm, you will be offered a contract based in our Teesside office. You will be welcomed, as part of our firm, from day one and encouraged to take an active part in the opportunities provided in both our Teesside and Newcastle office.
Your training will involve four, six-month seats in four of the following practice areas:

Commercial litigation
Commercial property
Wills, Trust and Probate

We will try to offer you experience in your areas of particular interest, but this cannot always be guaranteed. All trainees are assigned a partner who will mentor you throughout your contract, provide advice, guidance and support when needed. You will also have access to our HR manager who can assist your career development with Jacksons.
